As part of our biological control project,
together with the Hula Valley farmers and the JNF, we placed around 70
nest boxes for Barn Owls throughout the agricultural fields around the "Agmon".
Every year we monitor these boxes and ring the chicks and, if possible,
the adults also. This year our team found a high breeding success, both
for the number of breeding pairs and number of offspring for each pair. A
total of 33 pairs were found in the boxes (out of 62 boxes that were found
fit for breeding), with 13 chicks being the highest number in a single
brood (7-8 chicks were the mean). Altogether our team ended the day with
157 Barn Owls (around 20 were adults). These are high numbers compared with
last year, when only 22-23% of the boxes were occupied. The same
phenomenon of big broods and high proportions of occupied boxes was also
found this year in the Bet Shean Valley. On behalf of our very dedicated
team; Zev, Francis, Yonatan, Gev and Yael Enjoy birding and check out for
more updates soon.
